Winifred Dorothy Wilkes of Ventura passed away Saturday, May 26, 2007 after a brief illness. Her daughter Barbara Culbertson was by her bedside as she made a graceful transition. Born in Buffalo, New York January 19, 1906 she was the eldest child of Theodore and Jean Davis. Winifred moved to Ventura with her family in 1923. She worked for Pacific Bell where she met her husband to be Stephen "Shorty" Wilkes. Together they raised three children, Barbara, Donnabelle, and Bill on Santa Ynez Street in Ventura. After Shorty's retirement from the phone company, they moved to Ojai. She was widowed in 1965. Winifred enjoyed traveling, her many friends and her bridge clubs while she lived with her daughter Donnabelle McGonigle until her passing. She then moved to El Segundo to be with her daughter Barbara Culbertson where she continued to play bridge and read her books. She was a avid L.A. Laker fan, and enjoyed reading a book a day most of her life. Winifred and Barbara both returned to live in Ventura three months ago to be close to family and friends. She is survived by her sister-in-law Dorothy Davis of Ventura, daughter Barbara Culbertson of Ventura and her son Bill and daughter-in-law Sylvia Wilkes who live in Wyoming. Five of six grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren also survive her. A Rosary and Mass will be held at American Martyrs Church, 624 15th Street, Manhattan Beach, Friday June 1 at 3:PM Interment will be on Saturday, June 2 at 1 PM at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park 5400 Valentine Road, Ventura, California.
