Walter Baaden was born in the Bronx in 1929 and died in Torrance on January 1, 2020. After attending Cardinal Hayes High School, Walter majored in History and English at Iona College. He enlisted in the Army and was commissioned as an infantry officer. Upon discharge he returned to New York City and worked at his father’s advertising agency. In 1954, two neighborhood friends who became FBI Special Agents encouraged him to apply to the Bureau. His first assignment was the Los Angeles Field Office where he worked intelligence. He also assisted on the Frank Sinatra, Jr. kidnapping case, receiving a commendation letter. Walter continued MBA studies at the University of Southern California.
In 1955 Walter transferred to the Washington Field Office where he conducted surveillance on counterintelligence targets. He worked graveyard shifts in order to finish MBA studies at American University. Walter had met Ann, an American Airlines stewardess, when he worked in Los Angeles but they had a cross-country courtship until she resigned and moved to D.C. After their wedding at Blessed Sacrament Church in D.C. and the birth of their first daughter, Jan, they moved to Los Angeles. Walter became the Assistant Security Manager at TRW in Redondo Beach and later, Security Manager at Hughes. He spent 20 years overseeing 185 employees.
Walter retired in 1984, and established Baaden Security Management, Inc. The next 30 years advising diversified clients took him to various parts of the US. including the Panama Canal zone. The project prepared U.S. security teams to hand over control of the Panama Canal to the Panamanian government in 1991.
Beyond consulting, Walter volunteered at parent associations for St. James Grade School and Bishop Montgomery High School, served on the board of the church credit union. In 1970. Walter coached two of his sons (Michael and Steven), winning a California state championship in the American Youth Soccer Organization.
Walter is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ann, children: Jan, Terese, Jean, Thomas, Steven, Michael and Kathy and grandchildren: Alison, Steven, Matthew, Alexandra, Michaela, Kyle, Shane, Sophia, Mack and Stefan.
Funeral Mass at St. James Catholic Church, Redondo Beach, Saturday, January 25 at 1:30 pm. Reception immediately following at Bishop Montgomery H.S., Retreat Center, Torrance.
