Virginia May Powell
Born December 20, 1925 and left our company to be with our Lord on Wednesday, May 25, 2005. Virginia was born in Saint Petersburg, Florida to Lawrence and Elta Thornton who preceded her in death as did her second son, Bruce D. Cooper and third husband Gene F. Powell. Virginia (Ginny) was raised in Kendallville, Iowa after the crash of '29, lived in Sioux Falls, SD where she met her first two husbands, Alvin G. Cooper and Albert G. Erd. She moved to Torrance in 1959 when she married Albert. She worked as an Administrative Assistant in the corporate offices of Carter Haley Hale from 1963 until she retired and married Gene. During her retirement she traveled extensively and devoted her time to her artistic talents and serving as President/board member of the Gardena Valley Art Assoc.
She is survived by her son, Stephen L. Cooper of Torrance and his former wife Teri; daughter Nancy J. (Erd) Gilles of Richland, WA and her husband Dave; six grandchildren Lori (Jim) Mueller, Lisa (Steve) Sanders, Darlene (Joe) Fregoso, Wendy Gilles, David Gilles Jr., and Heather Gilles; and 11 great-grand children, Jake, Josh, Jeff, Adriana, Briana, Sara, Stevie, J.J., Samuel, Seth, and one in the oven; one sister, Caroline R. Anderson, one brother, Lawrence N. Thornton Jr.; four nieces, Doreen, Nadine, Jeannie, and Jenny; one nephew, David; two cousin Eleanore Kacher, and Charlotte Corson. Per her request, no services or internment; just family gathering and cremation.
