Valentin John Velez, 89 of Torrance, California. One of nine children of Aurora Cabrera and Felix Q. Velez was born on February 14, 1930 in Los Angeles, California. Aptly named after the day of his birth, Valentine’s Day, he would live a life defined by love. After graduating from Inglewood High in 1948, Val would serve his country in the army as a Morse code radio operator. Following his service, Val was wed to Maria Lupe Salinas on September 4, 1954. For the next 65 years, his family would continue to grow, and he would instill the importance of family into each new generation. To support his growing family, Val worked as a structure mechanic and sheet metal fabrication for airplanes until retiring in 1996. Although he valued hard work, he was also renowned for his stories. Some of the most vibrant memories of Val are the stories he told and the exuberance with which he delivered each one. While it is no secret that he was conservative with his money, Val always looked forward to his Laughlin trips to gamble, and would always come back raving about the prime rib dinners that he would enjoy there. Val passed peacefully at his home in Torrance on December 16, 2019. He is survived by his wife Maria, his four children Joseph, Martin, Valerie, and Reina, and by his 11 grandchildren, Vincent, Eric, Evan, Bryan, James, Cameron, Marissa, Adrianna, Alisandra, Reina, Hayden and 4 great grandchildren, Julian, Westley, Devan, Imogen. He lived a life that was truly blessed with love, surrounded by those that loved him dearly.
