Valdah (Vicki) Benson was born on Feb 5, 1926 in Ness City, KS, to James and Leota Harkness. She was the youngest of 4 children. She graduated from Ness city HS and received a Bachelor’s degree on Home Economics from Kansas University. She met and married the love of her life, Vern, in 1947, while a senior at KU. She went on to receive a degree from the Wolf School of Costume Design in Los Angles, CA. Vicki taught flat pattern design at that school for a few years until her first daughter was born. After moving to Manhattan Beach, CA, in 1952 she became active in Dolphins and later in Sandpipers for many years. Vicki was also active in fundraising for other charitable organizations including the American Cancer Society. She traveled extensively with her husband Vern and enjoyed sewing, knitting, needlepoint, reading, entertaining, and socializing with friends and family. She played piano and won national honors playing the flute while a senior in high school. She sang and was the soloist in her high school and church choirs. She is preceded in death by all of her siblings and her second daughter, Karla Lyman. Survived by her husband, Vern Benson; daughter Marlene Ligare from Park City, UT; five grandchildren: Kari Lyman, Tobi Miller, Scott Ligare, Marshall Ligare, Todd Ligare; cousin Keith Lewin; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at the Church of Religious Science located at 907 Knob Hill Ave, Redondo Beach, Ca 90277 on Saturday, June 11, 2011 at 3 PM. In lieu of flowers please make a contribution to your favorite charity or the Church of Religious Science.
