Thomas Francis Maher Tom Maher, 80, of Torrance passed away peacefully at home on July 2, 2009 . Born on a warm summer day in Chicago on June 7, 1929, to Greg and Irene Maher, he grew up on the west side with his brother Greg and sisters Irene and Arlene. He graduated from St. Ignatius High School in 1947 and Loyola University Chicago in 1952. Tom met his wife Dolores in 1953; they were married in 1955 and recently celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary on June 11th. They have five children and twelve grandchildren. Tom and Dolores moved from Des Plaines, Illinois , to Torrance in 1979, where they have lived in the same house for the past thirty years. For those of us who knew him as a husband, dad, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, co-worker, boss, Tom, or Mr. Maher, he will be missed. He was and forever will be the husband, lover, best-friend, and confidant to Dolores; the father, mentor, teacher, and role model to Tom, Michael, Maureen, Bill, and Kevin; the supportive, appreciative father-in-law to Grant and Debbie; the grandpa, buddy, voice of the leprechaun, and story-teller to Ryan, Brittany, Sean, Chad, Eric, Adam, Tyler, Lauren, Jake, Conor, Hannah, and Tommy; the animated, expressive, and pleasant man who came to read books to the students at St. Lawrence Martyr School; the hard-working, dedicated, loyal employee, and friend to the people he worked with at Hollywood Park Race Track locally, Arlington Park Race Track in Chicago, and Ernst & Ernst; the determined, goal-oriented student at St. Ignatius High School and Loyola University Chicago; the always caring, loving big brother to Greg, Irene, and Arlene; and the devoted, considerate son to Greg and Irene. Simply put, he will be forever on our minds and in our hearts. God Bless the Irish and God Bless Thomas Francis Maher! There will be a Prayer Vigil at St. Lawrence Martyr Church in Redondo Beach on Wednesday, July 8th, at 7PM and a Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at St. Lawrence Martyr Church on Thursday, July 9th, at 7PM followed by a reception in the parish hall.
