Dr. Theodore George Markellos passed at his home surrounded by his family and friends on Monday September 28, 2009.
Dr. Markellos was born June 12, 1925 in Kassandra, Greece to a family of physicians, lawyers, and educators. He obtained his medical degree from the Aristotelian University of Thessoloniki, Greece, but discontinued his studies to serve in the Greek Army Medical Corps in its fight against the communist insurgence from 1947 - 1950. He was awarded two Medals of Honor for his services by the King of Greece, Paul I. He came to the United States in 1953 for post graduate training in Psychiatry and Neurology. After his internship and residency at New York University and Yale, he married his sweetheart, Elaine Marder in 1955.
Dr. Markellos served the geriatric community in the South Bay for over 50 years, and Los Angeles County Mental Health for an additional 12 years. He was awarded Distinguished Life Fellow in 2003 by the American Psychiatric Society. Dr. Markellos had a passionate and boundless dedication for helping the mentally ill and indigent. He was equally proud of his Greek heritage and American citizenship.
Dr. Markellos will be deeply missed by his daughter, Kathy Markellos Valdesuso and his son Edward George Markellos; along with his grandchildren, Scott Edward, Madeline Elaine, and Theodore Anthony.
A prayer service will be held Wednesday, September 30, at 6:00 P.M. at St. Katherine's Greek Orthodox Church, 722 Knob Hill Avenue, Redondo Beach, CA 90277 (310-540-2434).
The funeral service will take place at St. Katherine's on Thursday, October 1st at 11:00 A.M., followed by a mercy meal at the Church's Community Center. Burial will follow with procession to Green Hills Memorial Park, 27501 So. Western Avenue, Rancho Palos Verdes.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to either St. Katherine's Religious and Cultural Library (722 Knob Hill Avenue, Redondo Beach, CA 90277) or Medical Teams World Wide (16541 Redmond Way #133C, Redmond, WA 98052).
