Sophia
Sophia Savedes Donlou, longtime resident of Palos Verdes Estates, was born on June 3, 1921 in Detroit, Michigan to Nicholas and Mary Savedes. She died of congestive heart failure on May 17, 2011 two weeks before her 90th birthday. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Ernest Donlou DDS; her parents, two sisters and brother. Sophia and Ernest had three children; John Donlou MD (Madeline) of Palos Verdes, Stephanie Donlou of Palos Verdes, and Maria Elena Berry (Bob) of Ketchum, Idaho. She was devoted to her five grandchildren; Rachel Pusey of San Francisco, Emily Donlou Lawrence (Anthony) of Washington DC, Tim Donlou Pusey of Santa Cruz, Taylor Berry of Los Angeles, and Nicholas Donlou of Monterey. She became a great grandmother last fall to Wyatt Edward Lawrence. Sophia dedicated herself to caring for her family. Everyone loved her cooking, her rose gardens, and visiting her home. Each grandchild has their own special memories of her as they were growing up. Her giving nature extended to the community. In the 1950’s she was very active as a Sandpiper in the South Bay. She worked hard for many years to establish St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church in Redondo Beach. She continued to support the Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Society, whose mission is philanthropy. Residents and staff at The Canterbury in Rancho Palos Verdes where she lived during the last few years of her life were treated to her wonderful smile and generous spirit. A Trisagion will be held at Rice Mortuary in Torrance on Sunday May 22 at 7:00 pm. The funeral will be held Monday, May 23 at 11:00 am at St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church on Knob Hill in Redondo Beach. Burial will follow at Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to St. Katherine Church in Redondo Beach.
