Sister Mary Ellen Sprouffske

Sister Mary Ellen Sprouffske, C.S.J. age 94, passed away on Wednesday February 22, 2023 at the St. John of God Retirement Center in Los Angeles, California. She was born August 10, 1928 in Inglewood, California, into a strong Irish family. St Patrick’s Day was a Holy Day of Obligation! Sister Mary Ellen was a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet since March 17, 1947.

After graduating from Bishop Conaty High School, Sister Mary Ellen entered Community in 1946. Her years of ministry included teaching in elementary and secondary levels, administration and adult education, and spiritual direction. In her later years, she served in Province Archives and with the Desert Refuge for Peace Officers. She retired to Holy Family Community in December 2011 and found love and companionship from the sisters, nurses and staff who found in her a beautiful and warm and generous spirit.

She is survived by many nieces and cousins and her dear friend Sister Pat Callahan.

A Service of Remembrance will be held on Zoom, Wednesday, March 29, 2023 at 2:00 pm. A link will be available by contacting SMNinteman@csjla.org . Graveside service will be held Tuesday March 28, 2023 at 10:00am at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California.
