Shirley C. Melville The soul of Shirley C. Melville left this world on April 3, 2008. She was 84 years old. Shirley was born in Denver, Colorado January 27, 1924 and moved with her parents to the Los Angeles area several years later. She was married to Albert Melville, Jr. in June of 1947. They moved to Manhattan Beach several years later. Shirley loved to dance and could be found at almost any family or friendly gatherings dancing with her husband of more than 60 years. They would dance to swing, the twist, or any number of other dance styles. She loved baseball, especially the Los Angeles Dodgers and watched baseball everyday of the season with Al. Shirley traveled and camped all over the United States with her children, husband, relatives and friends. She and Al made adventures out of all their travels and made it a point to visit as many of the major league baseball parks as they could. Shirley enjoyed many artistic pastimes. She painted many pictures still found in the family home. She was a "crafter" and scrapbook maker, long before these activities were in vogue. Her collection of family scrapbooks comprises 25 volumes. She loved Christmas, spending many hours hand-making decorations and ornaments for family and friends. Shirley taught her children the value of sharing and compassion. She was devoted to her Catholic faith and her parish, American Martyrs. Shirley enlarged her family by opening her home, her arms and her heart to the many in-laws, friends, and work associates. Shirley raised eight children (and one husband, Al): seven boys and a girl. Seven children survive her passing. (A son, Timothy, was killed in Viet Nam, in 1968 and her beloved Al passed away in 2006.) In addition to her children, Shirley is survived by 13 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren, and the spouses of her sons and daughter. A Rosary Service will be held Thursday, April 10, 2008 at 6:00 PM at American Martyrs Church, 624 15th Street, Manhattan Beach. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 11, 2008 at 11:00 AM at American Martyrs with interment at Holy Cross Cemetery at 2:00 PM. A special celebration of Shirley's life will be held at the family home for friends of Shirley's from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM Saturday, April 12, 2008. Shirley wished donations be given to Hospice Foundation, 2601 Airport Drive, Suite 230, Torrance, CA 90505, in lieu of flowers.

  1. I remember the fun at the Christmas parties and camping with the Melville’s as a kid. But no one could keep a baseball score book like Shirley
