Ruth Schabacker September 16, 1926- June 17, 2011 Ruth Helena Schabacker was born and grew up in Arapahoe, Nebraska, the third of 5 children of Reverend Martin and Otilia Sanders Schabacker. She attended high school in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where she also was subsequently trained as a nurse in Lutheran Hospital. After graduation she joined the Army Nurse Corps, serving until 1951. Tuberculosis contracted in the Service necessitated convalescence following which she moved to Long Beach, California in 1952, where she lived until her death. During that time she initially worked at the Long Beach VA Hospital, then the Dental Office of Dr. Jack Brandon, and finally the Oral Surgeon's Office of Dr. Brian Chung in Whittier, CA. She was an extensive world traveler with her longtime companion, David Stewart, a supporter of Concordia University of Orange County, and a regular attendee of both evening classes at Long Beach State University and Bethany Lutheran Church Bible Study in Long Beach, where she had many wonderful friends. She is survived by her older sister, Dorothy, her older brother, Martin, many nieces and nephews across the country, and locally, we who benefitted the most and will miss her generosity, love and kindness: her niece, nephew, and grandniece, Britt, Ken, and Hana Huff.

Guestbook

  1. I was lucky enough to know Ruth and Dave since about 1990. They were both wonderful and fun people who loved adventure. My wife and I so looked forward to hearing about all of Ruth’s many travels. She was truly a woman of the world. May she rest in peace.
