Russell Sage Liston, a 65 year resident of the South Bay, passed away on Sunday, May 8, 2011. Born in Kenton, OK, Russell was 93 years old when he died. He served in the U.S. Army 46th Engineer Battalion in the South Pacific during WWII. Russell was a Shriner in the Masonic Lodge. In his job as an excavating contractor, he assisted in building the Lodge currently located on Artesia Blvd. in Redondo Beach. Russell was a lifelong fisherman and loved taking his son, Dane, fishing on the Colorado River and later taking his grandchildren fishing in the lakes of southern Oregon. He and his beloved wife traveled extensively in the U.S. in their motor home and Russell was very proud that they had spent time in every state. His passion was taking care of his wife, children and grandchildren. He was always there when his family needed him. Russell loved animals, particularly dogs, and they provided much companionship for him and Vana as they aged. He will be remembered fondly for wearing his bib overalls and khaki shirts every day. Russell is survived by his wife of 64 years, Vana Lee Liston; daughter, Twila (Robert) Elliott of Manhattan Beach, CA; daughter Dawna Bradley of Rogue River, OR; son, Dane (Claudia) Liston of Noank, CT; sister Alice Rumbaugh of Sacramento, CA; six grandchildren, 12-year old twin great-granddaughters, and twin great-grandchildren who will be born later this year. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ellsworth Abraham and Nettie Sage Liston and an infant son, Dale Ralph Liston. A graveside service will be held at Pacific Crest Cemetery in Redondo Beach on Wednesday, May 11th and 1:00p.m.
