Burns, Robert J., a 62-year resident of the South Bay area passed away on Sunday, June 1, peacefully after a year long illness. He was 92 years old. Bob was born in New York City in 1916, the first of five children of Albert Logan and Ruth Gilbert Burns. After his father's early death, his mother raised the children in Wichita, Kansas. Bob married Ardys Georgene Holdridge in Dallas, Texas in 1939; in fact his passing came just two days before their 69th wedding anniversary. Bob is survived by his wife and four children: Dorothy (Doug) Smith of Arvada, Colorado; Janet Webb, Taos, New Mexico, Jean (Jeff) Mershon, Evergreen, Colorado; and Steve (Linda) Burns. The Burns union has produced 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Bob retired from North American Rockwell after a 36-year career as an aeronautic engineer. He and his wife, with several other couples, co-founded Centinela Bible Church in Hawthorne sixty years ago and worked in many positions within the church over the years. They most recently have attended Torrance First Baptist Church on Carson Avenue. Friends and family will gather to celebrate Bob's life on Thursday, June 5, at Rice Mortuary Chapel, 5310 Torrance Blvd., Torrance. The service will be at 11am and a reception will follow at Rice Lighthouse Reception Room.
