Robert E. ‘Bob’ Vitale of Palos Verdes, California died Tuesday, August 23, 2011, in Los Angeles after battling cancer. Born in San Francisco, California to Nicholas and Hazel Vitale, Robert was 82. Robert was preceded in death by his wife Mary J. Vitale; survived by his son Robert L. Vitale (Theresa Repasky) of Monterey County; daughter Mary C. Zarlin (Howard Zarlin); grandchildren, Demi, Ashley and Ellie of San Diego; daughter Jamie S. Vitale (Todd Prentice); grandchildren, Jack and Lily of Torrance; nieces Debby Hight of Napa and Cindy Clay of San Carlos; nephew Steven Rosenthal of San Jose; Aunt Lorraine and Uncle Ray Rosa of Mt. View; cousins Frank R. and Grace Vitale of Menlo Park, LaVerne Vitale and Frank T. Vitale of San Carlos, Lojska Ales of Slovenia, Yanez Demsar of Lake Tahoe; stepsister Audrey Fletcher of Sunnyvale and his companion Mary Ann Froley of Santa Barbara. Robert is also survived by many relatives and friends in Slovenia. Robert grew up in rural East Palo Alto, graduated from Sequoia High School, Redwood City and attended Stanford University. Robert served in the US Air Force in Germany during the Berlin Airlift, flying into Berlin several times to aid people there. A self taught electronics engineer, he worked at TRW Space Systems, Redondo Beach for 35+ years. Robert was a nationally ranked runner and member of the TRW Track Club. He also enjoyed snow skiing, hiking, camping and especially golf. Known for his fashion sense, style and ability to talk with everyone, Robert enjoyed traveling. Some of the more interesting places Robert traveled to included Egypt, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Japan, Romania, Croatia, England, China, Germany and Slovenia, where he had many relatives. At home, he was a welcoming tour guide often opening up his home to many visitors from overseas including members of the Slovenian National Ski Team whom he befriended over the years. Always on the go, Robert had remarkable energy; those who knew him say “he lived his name.” A funeral mass will be held at 3:00pm Wednesday, August 31, 2011, at St. John Fisher Church in Rancho Palos Verdes; a celebration will follow at the Trump National Golf Club in Palos Verdes at 4:30pm. Robert will be buried at Riverside National Cemetery on Thursday, September 1, 2011 at 10:00am. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Robert’s name to the Pacific Mesothelioma Center.
