Richard Stuart ''Dick'' Fitzgerald, 79, died peacefully on Sunday, September 28, 2003, at Little Company of Mary Hospital surrounded by his family. Dick was born on April 22, 1924 in Santa Monica. He was the former Director of the County Department of Beaches and lobbied tenaciously for coastal access. He was prominent in the Redondo Beach community and active in dozens of community organizations including; Redondo Beach and Torrance Chambers of Commerce, the governing board of the former South Bay Hospital; founder of the International Surf Festival and Redondo Beach Round Table; founder of the Redondo Beach Sister City Program with Ensenada and LaPaz, one of the founders of the South Bay Athletic Club, and past president of the California Junior Chamber of Commerce. Dick was a magnanimous force within the community and touched the lives of many. He was extremely giving and enriched the lives of his family and friends. He will surely be missed. Dick is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Betty, five children; Diane (Michael) Watson, Michael Fitzgerald, Barbara Francis, Janene DeCoster and Marlene (Wayne) Schumaker; twelve grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. The family has scheduled a visitation/viewing on Friday, October 3rd from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at White and Day Mortuary, 901 Torrance Blvd., Redondo Beach. Memorial services will be held, Saturday, October 4th at 11 :00 a.m. at Riviera United Methodist Church, 375 Palos Verdes Blvd., Redondo Beach. A reception will be held immediately following the services. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, please send any donations in his memory to the Salvation Army or South Bay Auxiliary at LCMC.

He has been so very much loved and appreciated by RT members for the last 40 years. I appreciated his “can do” spirit even when he couldn\’t, as well as his great sense of humor.
