Raymond Leo Curtin, a long-time resident of the South Bay, has passed away on Saturday, May 17, 2014 in Torrance. Born in Los Angeles, CA, Raymond was 88 when he died. Raymond is survived by his children Mary T. (Donald) Appleby; Raymond G. Curtin; Ruth E. (Richard) Harshaw; Margaret L. (Thomas) Hanscom; John F. Curtin; and his sister Virginia E. Curtin. He was the grandfather of six grandchildren Randy and Jason Appleby, Laurelle Holodnak, Shontel Harshaw, Kailey Appleby and Michelle Holodnak and the great-grandfather of Kasper and Collin Appleby. He was preceded in death by his wife Ruth Marie (aka Mary) Curtin; his parents Stephen P. Curtin and Ella J. Curtin; and his brother Steven E. Curtin. Faith, family, friends and country were all very important to him. He served his country in the Army and the Merchant Marines during WWII. He was an active member at St. Catherine Laboure Catholic Church in Torrance, especially in the Holy Name Society. Raymond worked for the LA County Sanitation District as an inspector for the safe implementation of their water systems throughout the county for 40 years. He loved American History, Geology and had a passion for sports. A gathering of family and friends will be held at St. Catherine Laboure Church in Torrance on Tuesday, May 27, 2014 from 6:30-9pm with a Rosary at 7pm. The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Catherine Laboure Church as well on Wednesday, May 28 at 10am, followed by the burial at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City. The reception will follow at Rice Mortuary in Torrance until 4pm.
