Raffaele La Ferla, a 36 year resident of Redondo Beach California, passed away on Saturday November 9, 2019 in Bishop, California at the age of 67. Raffaele was born in Comiso, Italy. Raffaele received an advanced degree in chemical engineering from the University of Bologna. He worked as a chemical process engineer research scientist, a profession that allowed him to combine his intellect and creativity. He was a bit of a mad scientist, an innovative researcher who received multiple patents for his work in developing chemical processes for manufacturing silicon computer chips, iridium foams, and lithium battery technologies in the US and China. Raffaele was a renaissance man and possessed unending curiosity. He loved science, art, politics, soccer, travel, cooking, and debating any topic. He filled any room he entered. He loved entertaining, cooking full gourmet Italian meals. All left his kitchen begging for more. Few left without drinking an espresso. Raffaele is survived by wife Portia La Ferla, son Joseph La Ferla, brother, Giovanni La Ferla, sister-in-law, Marisa Sortino, nephews Lorenzo and Marco La Ferla; in-laws, Michaele and Shelly Robelotto, Faith Reilly, Christina and Gary Jones, Dottye Lum; American nieces and nephews Emily, David, Sam and Sara, and great nieces Addiie and Sophie. The Service will be held on Friday November 22, 2019 at 10:30am at Lighthouse Memorials & Receptions - White & Day Center in Redondo Beach. After a reception until 1:15pm, burial will follow at Pacific Crest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, consider an act of kindness in Raffaele’s memory.
