Phillip “Sonny” Medeiros
September 20, 1935 – March 4, 2020
On Wednesday, March 4, 2020, “Sonny” Medeiros of Torrance, California was called to heaven to be with the Angels. Sonny was born in Maui in 1935, the 9th child to Antone and Julia Medeiros. In 1947, at the age of 12, Sonny met the love of his life Laura Wong on Maui. The islands kept them apart until high school when they reconnected and became sweethearts. Sonny and Laura were married in 1959 and lived in Torrance; in February-2020 they celebrated 61 years of marriage. Sonny served in the Army and worked at Edelbrock, Magnavox, and Philips until he retired. After retirement, Sonny and Laura took to the road and traveled across the country with Laura’s sisters and brothers-in-laws. Sonny’s passion was golfing. But if he wasn’t golfing, you could find him in his garage making golf clubs, in the yard tending to his tropical plants and orchids, and drinking “Coors” beer. Sonny is survived by his wife of 61 years, Laura, sisters Annie Corniel and Margaret Madrid, his daughters Rochelle Medeiros, Danette Lewelling, son Brian Medeiros, and grandson Robert Lewelling.
Church services are scheduled for Thursday, July 9, 2020 at St. Philomena Catholic Church, Carson, California. Due to limited seating restrictions, only family members will attend the services.
Sonny will be laid to rest at Los Angeles National Cemetery.
A “Celebration of Life” memorial will be planned for a future date.
