Hayes, Paul Brander, a 62-year resident of the South Bay, passed away on Tuesday, September 4, 2007. He was 85. Born in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, to a cowboy and a schoolmarm, Paul was raised in Montana and Idaho. He served as a sergeant in the US Army during World War II. Paul later studied engineering at the University of Idaho, UCLA and Northrop Engineering School. He was an aeronautical engineer for North American Aviation and Rockwell International where he worked on manned, moon flights. He married Elaine Ardath Palmer in 1951 and together raised their three daughters. They were active members of the Manhattan Beach Community Church. He remained devoted to Ardath until her passing in 2003. Paul Hayes was a musically talented, sharp-witted, sincere, humble and honorable man, dedicated to his wife and family. He will be missed by daughters Joanne Davidson of Redondo Beach, Pamela Conde of Hawthorne, Kathleen Hayes of Redondo Beach; brother George Hayes of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; and grandchildren Randall Davidson, Lorraine Davidson Sellars, Adam Conde and Adrian Conde. Viewing will be Sunday, September 16, 2:00-6:00 at White and Day, Manhattan Beach. Memorial Service will be at the Manhattan Beach Community Church on Sunday, September 23, at 2:00. A memorial fund has been established in honor of Paul B. Hayes at the Church.

  1. It seems like just yesterday when my favorite uncle would pluck my nose, put his thumb between his fingers and tell me ‘Oops! Got your nose!’ I’ll never forget the twinkle in his eyes and his easy laugh, and the way my Dad would smile and laugh when we visited his oldest brother. We’ll miss Uncle Paul.
