Mildred B Doxtader, 94, a resident of Torrance since 1953, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2012. Born August 7, 1918, in Ilion, NY to James and Mildred Bowie, Mildred was married to James Doxtader who preceded her in death in 1968. Mildred is survived by her son, James Doxtader, her sister Barbara (Don) Combar, two nieces, a nephew and many friends, young and old. Mildred was an accomplished basketball player in high school, and she graduated from Cobleskill College in New York with a degree in Nutrition at a time when most women did not attend college. During WWII she worked at Remington Arms to support the war effort. Mildred was known for her excellent cooking skills, her talent as a seamstress, and she enjoyed reading books and 2 daily newspapers -front to back- a habit she picked up from her father, James Bowie. In addition to her greatest joy of being a wife and mother, Mildred held many different positions throughout her life until she decided it was time to retire at the age of 70. Her proudest accomplishment was that her son achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Mildred will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Graveside services will be held Saturday, September 29, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Pacific Crest Cemetery. In lieu of flower, please just be kind to one another.

  1. We met Mildred and her husband Jim as new ex-GIs getting our first homes under the GI Bill in 1953/54. We became life long friends. Mildred was a Neighbor, Friend, Confidant and even a God Mother to our children. Kathryn Ave was made special because of Mildred. Knowing her was indeed a special privilege and the memory of Mildred will always be with us.
