MICHAEL JAY KARGER-November 16, 1948-March 13, 2007
Michael Karger passed away peacefully on March 13, 2007 surrounded by friends and family. In death as in life, those surrounding Michael felt an aura of comfort and closeness in his presence. Intellectually curious and forever playful, he pursued his interests with zeal. Michael's life passions were many, ranging from jazz to preserving African wildlife. But none came close to his devotion to his wife Suzanne, his lifetime feline children, including Tigger, Sam, Fred, Ginger and Sammy, and of course, his beloved game of hockey.
Born in New York City November 16, 1948, Michael graduated from State University of New York and attended law school at Buffalo School of Law. His extensive public service career began as a VISTA volunteer in Illinois, followed by service as an assistant project director for urban renewal in New York. Michael continued in public service after moving to California in 1974, working as deputy city attorney for Santa Ana, and later as assistant city attorney for Gardena. In 1982 he was appointed city attorney for Gardena, a position he held until 1995 when he became a member of the law firm of Kane, Ballmer and Berkman. He continued his public law career at the firm for 10 years, serving as legal counsel to several Southern California cities.
Michael was graced with a friendly, gentle and humorous sense of life, making him easy to be around and to love, as many did. Although his gentle nature transformed when he attended hockey games (as we always say: Go Kings!), this was an expression of his exuberance as a true fan.
Michael is survived by his beloved wife Suzanne. Their 13 years together and her vigilance and love during his illness, gave Michael a peace and comfort that he truly deserved.
