Born in: Torrance, California
Resided in: Torrance, California

Matthew William Mehegan was born on December 26, 1955 to Donald Lemuel Mehegan and Lorraine Rhoda Mehegan.  Matt enjoyed going on many family vacations with his mother and father, traveling across the country in the family station wagon and his favorite trip when he was younger was going to the Grand Canyon.

He went to Aviation High School and graduated from El Camino completing the Construction Technology Program. After completing the program, he became a general contractor and practiced for over 38 years.  Matt specialized in concrete and framing and built many homes throughout the South Bay.

Matthew loved watching, his pride and joy, his son, Mike Mehegan wrestle and play baseball.  There were many weekends where Matt would drive his son, and his friends, who were fellow wrestlers, to tournaments all over the state of California.  Matt had many hobbies including gardening (especially taking care of his pepper plants) and fishing.  He was an avid fisherman and met many of his friends later in life through SWA.

Matthew was raised with the Jewish faith but was not a practicing member.

His favorite animal was his baby girl Athena.  She was a big beautiful rottweiler who passed about a month before Matt did.  They would always go on walks, at least three a day.  Every Wednesday and Thursday were ride days and his son Michael would rile Athena up and get her all pumped up.  Matt would give his son Michael a look that basically said “Gee, thanks bud!”  Matt would take her in his old Chevy truck and drive her around the neighborhood where she would bark at other dogs and just be a happy tail wagging pupper.

His best friends growing up were Gary Spencer, John Gillespie, and Larry Hilby.  They were all good friends and always stayed in touch.  One of Mike’s favorite memories is when Gary Spencer gathered up John and Larry and picked Matt and Mike up in a limo.  It was for my dad’s 60th birthday and a great time was had by all.  I have never seen my dad get so excited to be in a limo with his best buds.

Another good friend of Matt Mehegan was Larry Bynon.  They would go on many fishing trips together as well as with other members of SWA.

Matthew William Mehegan is survived by his son Michael, his cousin Art Goldberg, his good friend and mother to his son Laura Patti, and his friends, Gary Spencer, John Gillespie, Larry Hilby, and Larry Bynon.

May he rest in peace  April 9. 2023
