Mary Rita was a remarkable woman. She obtained her degree in nursing in 1946 and distinguished herself as a surgical nurse. In 1949 she moved to California to work at St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica. Shortly thereafter, she met her beloved Timothy "Ted" Cotter, whom she wed in 1951.
The couple moved to Rancho Palos Verdes in 1961 and was among the founding families of St. John Fisher Parish. Mary Rita also participated in the Social Service Auxiliary and Knights and Ladies of the Holy Sepulcher. She also assisted Ted as he established the family business.
They traveled extensively, developing a fondness for Ted's native Ireland as their favorite destination.
Mary Rita possessed a quiet strength and deep commitment to her Catholic faith, drawing on both as she faced the challenges of raising a large family. She cherished the 53 years of marriage she shared with her husband Ted, and delighted in the birth of each of her 7 children and 13 grandchildren. Mary Rita was dearly loved by her family and friends, and will be greatly missed.
