Mary Helen Miska, a 60-year resident of Torrance, passed away on Monday afternnon, February 23, 2009 in Torrance, CA. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Mary was 91 when she died. Mary was one of eight children. In 1941, Mary met her future husband, Henry Miska. They were joined in holy matrimony on June 7, 1942, and were married for 54 happy years until Henry's passing in 1996. Their union was blessed with two children, Connie and Calvin. After the war, Henry decided to head to California for employment. With a job secured, Mary and daughter Connie left Cleveland for California. Mary helped Henry build their home in Lawndale, CA when Calvin was born. The family moved to Torrance where Mary lived the rest of her life. She enjoyed taking care of her home, grandchildren, sewing and baking. No one could resist a slice of Mary's home-made poppy seed cake! Mary is survived by her son Calvin, daughter-in-law Alice; three grandchildren -- Tyler and Kyle Miska, Craig Adamoli; siblings Joseph, John and Steve Staresinic. In addition, she leaves a host of nieces, nephews, and relatives. The memorial service will be held at Rice Mortuary Chapel on Saturday, March 14, 2009 at 10:00 A.M. A reception will follow in Rice's Lighthouse reception room until 1:00 P.M. A graveside service will follow at Pacific Crest Cemetery in Redondo Beach. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Providence TrinityCare Hospice Foundation at 2601 Airport Drive, Suite 230, Torrance, CA 90505.
