Marie
Marie Therese Gibson, 77, of Redondo Beach passed peacefully into eternal life on Sunday, November 11, 2007, at Little Company of Mary Hospital, surrounded by her family. Marie's sudden passing was entirely unexpected. Marie was born in Chicago on November 2, 1930, to Daniel and Cecilia Ahern, natives of Ireland who had immigrated to the United States twenty years earlier. She attended Resurrection elementary school and Alvernia High School before moving with her family to California, where she graduated from St. Francis de Sales High School in Riverside in 1949. While Marie was working as a secretary at Pacific Mutual Insurance Company in Los Angeles, a friend set up a blind date for her with Tom Gibson. On May 8, 1954, Marie and Tom were married at Old Mission Santa Barbara. After they settled into their first home in Montrose, sons Mike, John, and Jim were born. The young family moved to Redondo Beach in 1960, where Patty and Paul were born. Immediately following that move, Marie began her active involvement at St. Lawrence Martyr Parish, which lasted for over 47 years. In addition to her volunteer work at St. Lawrence Martyr School and Bishop Montgomery High School, attended by all five of her children, Marie taught children's religious education classes, served as a Eucharistic minister at Mass and for the sick, trained new Eucharistic ministers, acted as a lay presider, and participated actively in numerous prayer and study groups, most recently the Angels Prayer Group. As Marie's children became older, she worked countless hours as a volunteer at Little Company of Mary Hospital and in local hospice programs. In more recent years, a typical day for Marie included a walk at the beach, attendance at noon Mass, visiting with her sisters Ceal and Anne by telephone or over an afternoon cup of tea, and keeping up with the activities and achievements of her seven grandchildren, who were the light of her later years. After fifty-two years of marriage, her beloved Tom passed away in October of last year. Marie will remain ever present in the hearts of her children Mike, John, Jim, Patty, and Paul; daughters-in-law Shawn, Jean, and Tanya; grandchildren David, Kevin, Danny, Patrick, Erin Marie, Grace Marie, and Jack; beloved sisters Ceal and Anne; brothers-in-law Charlie and Larry; members of her large extended family; and many, many cherished friends. A vigil service will take place on Friday, November 16, at 7:00 in the evening at Rice Mortuary in Torrance. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at St. Lawrence Martyr Church, Redondo Beach, on Saturday, November 17, at 9:00 in the morning, and will be followed by a reception at the Parish Hall. Private internment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to one of Marie's favorite charities, the Doak Center for Palliative Care at Little Company of Mary Hospital ((310) 543-6900).
