September 11, 1918 ~ August 25, 2016
Maria S. Vasquez has completed her journey through life. It was a wonderful and adventurous 97 years, 11 months and 13 days. Maria began her life on Sept 11, 1918 on a ranch called Providencia in Chihuahua, Mexico. There she lived with her parents, 11 siblings and cousins. She met Manuel Vasquez in the local town of Parral where after a long courtship they married in 1944 and came to Los Angeles for their honeymoon. They discovered that the city offered so much opportunity for a better life that they decided to stay. She spent 50 years of her life in the South Bay, residing in Lawndale since 1966.
Maria was a soul mate to her husband Manuel who preceded her in death. She was the mother of Mary Lou, Manny and Ralph, grandmother of 4 and great grandmother of 3. Her greatest joy in life was family and friends which she had many. Her love of people and children led her to become a teacher's aid at Jane Addams School where she enjoyed helping young Spanish speaking children to improve their English skills. She will be remembered as being sweet, loving, caring, and funny. A celebration of her life is scheduled for this Sunday at the Rice Mortuary 5310 Torrance Blvd., viewing and personal prayer from 9:30 AM to 11 AM, service from 11 to 12 PM and reception until 2 PM.
