Maria Kerr Pena, a 62 year resident of Torrance, passed away on Tuesday, October 12, 2010. Born in Cuba, Maria was 91 and, as was her wish, died at her home surrounded by her children and family. She was a lover of poetry, literature, and music and in her youth wrote several columns for her hometown newspaper. The same satirical wit that infused her writing was ever present throughout her life. Her children, grandchildren and friends will remember when the inevitable twitch of her nose signaled that something had struck her funny bone and knew a witty comment was sure to follow. As she would tell you though, her proudest achievement in life was providing a loving environment, filled with the rich aromas of her kitchen, for her family. She is survived by her daughters, Emma (Charles) Conaway, Elizabeth (Ron) Roberts, Anna Marie Pena, son John (Nikki) Pena all of Torrance, CA, daughter Tina Saxe of Palos Verdes, CA., grandchildren, Kathy Conaway, Jennifer Conaway, Danielle Saxe, Christopher Roberts, Amanda Welch, Alicia Pena and great-grandchildren, Olivia Welch and Grayson Roberts as well as Sister Dolores Guerra of Redondo Beach. She was preceded in death by her father, Albert Kerr, her mother, Catalina Kerr, her husband, W. Orestes Pena, her sister, Emma M. Kerr, her nephew Alberto Aguilera, and her son-in-law, Richard Saxe. The Graveside Service will be held at Pacific Crest Cemetery in Redondo Beach on October 18, 2010 at 2:00 PM with burial immediately following.
