Louis Robert Bechtel, 83, passed away July 7th, with his loved ones by his side at his home in Rancho Palos Verdes after a 3 1/2 year battle with cancer. He was born in Shadyside, Ohio in 1924, the son of Louis A. and Regina Bechtel. He was married to his wife Jean in 1946 and she preceded him in death on September 23, 2000 after a marriage of 54 years. He will also be reunited in eternal life with his sister Lucille and granddaughter Ellen. He is survived by his sons Jim and Tom, grandson Jack, and granddaughter Claire. He enjoyed a lengthy career with Atlantic Richfield in Philadelphia, where he resided with his family in the suburb of King of Prussia, later relocating to Los Angeles. Following Lou's retirement from Arco in 1982, he became a published author and traveled the world with Jean. He particularly loved Paris, and would send Jean off to the Cordon Blue while he strolled the art museums and Montmartre, the "painter's hill" in the 18th arrondissement. Lou was a true gentleman who was devoted to his family and was loved by many. A vigil service will be held at 7:30 PM, July 12th at St John Fisher Church in Palos Verdes. A funeral mass will be held at 11AM on Friday, July 13th at the same location, followed by a burial service at Green Hills Cemetery. A reception will be held immediately after the burial service in the Fireside Room at St. John Fisher.
