Lorraine
Holmes, Lorraine Lorraine passed away April 23, 2008 at Torrance Memorial Medical Center following a very brief hospitalization for pneumonia. She was born in Chicago, Illinois on August 22, 1917. She lived, attended school, and worked in Chicago for many years. It was at work in the newspaper business (Chicago Tribune) where she met and married Charles Holmes. The newspaper business (San Francisco News) brought them to San Francisco in 1951 and to Los Angeles (Los Angeles Herald Express) in 1960. Following other aerospace employment, Lorraine retired from Hughes Aircraft Company Electro-Optical and Data Systems Group in 1981 after many years in technical publications. In retirement she volunteered as an adult literacy teacher as well as teaching English to those for whom English was a second language. She also read to the blind and made extensive generous charitable contributions to a variety of causes. After 8 years in Westchester and a few brief years in Inglewood, Lorraine and Charles moved to El Segundo in the 1970's where they happily spent the remainder of their lives. Lorraine was preceded in death by her wonderful fraternal twin brother Ted Carstenn and her beloved husband of 40 years Charles H. Holmes. She is survived by her son Bob Holmes of Manhattan Beach and his wife BJ, her cousin Ray Prochnow of Encino, her loving caregivers, Zanaida, Bianca, Bonnie, and Cecilia, and many many dear friends of all ages whose lives she enriched. At her request, there will be no services. In keeping with her life of quiet giving, kindness, and friendship, the family asks that you do an act of kindness for someone less fortunate and consider a contribution to the charity, church, or temple of your choice.
