Lidia Fernandez Onderka
November 1, 1936 ~ December 2, 2023
Resided in: Gardena, California
Lidia Fernandez Onderka was a very strong woman, who had overcome many obstacles in life. In spite, of her early struggles she was an extremely CARING woman, that shared her wisdom through her stories, laughter, and always giving support to her family back in Peru. She led her life with love and courage leaving behind loving memories of a woman who treasured her family.
Lidia passed away peacefully on December 2, 2023, at the age of 87. She was born in Iquitos, Peru on November 1, 1936, to Maria Tuesta Mozombite and Arturo Fernandez Cifuentes and was the second eldest of five children. Her early life was very difficult. She was raised by her godmother and lived a life very much like Cinderella. She managed most of the household duties, such as waking up at 5am before school to carry buckets of water from the well for the family to consume each day. Fortunately, at the age of 17 she happily reunited with her mother and siblings, forming an enormously loving bond that lasted through the test of time and distance. Eventually, she moved to the capital city of Lima, and worked at a prestigious company Andreus Pharmaceutical Lab as a lab technician for ten years before immigrating to the United States in 1965, when she was 29 years old.
After living in Los Angeles for ten years and working at multiple jobs over the years, her destiny changed when she met her prince charming at the Alpine Village on New Year’s Eve in 1975. Lidia married Frank Onderka a little over a year later at the Alpine Village, where they first met. She became a caring stepmother to his son Frank Jr. They were a glamorous couple that went on to start multiple businesses and become active members of the Lions Club of Gardena. Frank was the true love of her life, and they lived a happy life together for many years. Yet, she never forgot about her family her and Peru making sure to visit, welcome all into her home, and help in any way she could. She kept a strong bond with her brothers and sisters, as well as built strong relationships with her nieces and nephews. She was loved dearly by everyone that was lucky enough to know her.
Lidia was preceded in death by her elder sister Hilda Fernandez in July 2020, and by her husband Frank Onderka in June of 2023. She is survived by her stepson Frank Onderka, Jr; sisters and brother Miriam Fernandez, Graciela Del Aguila and Arturo Fernandez; and multiple nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed but the love she shared will continue to live on through our memories forever.
