Peterson, Laurence Elling, a 59 year resident of the South Bay, passed away on Wednesday, April 12, 2006 in Torrance. Born in North Dakota, Laurence was 84 when he died. Laurence was a member of the Los Angeles Rubber Group and worked in the rubber industry for over 50 years, over 30 of those working for GoodYear Tire and Rubber where he helped develop every thing from tires, to space shuttle fuel liners; fire hose to Super Balls and Silly Putty. He was one of the best rubber chemists in the country. Through most of his life, Laurence was an avid reader and loved to shop. In later years he would surf the Web for things of scientific interest or to shop on line. He also liked to build things for his home and at one time he brewed his own beer and made his own wine. Laurence also taught rubber chemistry at USC for many years. He is survived by Wife, Joyce Peterson, Son, Lance (Susan) Peterson , Daughter, Lerri Peterson , Daughter, Lana (Tony) Wilson, four grandsons: Scott Coatsworth, Kellan, Bryce and Terrell Peterson, his brother Curt and sisters Luella and Karen. The Service will be held at Rice Mortuary in Torrance on Tuesday, April 18 at 2 p.m, followed by a gathering in the Rice Lighthouse Reception Room. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cancer Society or to cancer research.
