Julia Donlou, a 75 year resident of Redondo Beach, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Monday, Oct. 1, 2012. Born in Ankara, Turkey on April 11, 1912, she returned to her homeland Greece in the population exchange of 1924. In 1928, she married her husband George, immigrating to the U.S. to live in Detroit, Michigan where she gave birth to two sons, Gordon and Ernie. She settled in Redondo Beach with her family in 1937 where she fully enjoyed the rest of her life by the ocean in the company of friends and family.
A gentle soul, Julia touched everyone she met with her kindness, humble nature and deep faith in her church. She loved to crochet, cook, share stories of the past, enjoy dinners with her family, walk the Esplanade daily and go to church every Sunday. A devout Greek Orthodox Christian, Julia was a founding member of St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church where she was active in their Philoptochos and Senior Citizen groups. Julia loved everyone, but most of all she loved her family and was blessed with 100 beautiful years to enjoy each and every one of them.
She was preceded in death by her parents Anastasia and Iorthanis, her husband George, her son Ernie, her granddaughter Julie and her 5 younger sisters.
She is survived by her beloved son Gordon (Maria) Donlou, her daughter-in-law Sophia Donlou, her grandchildren George (Lynn) Donlou, Chris (Kelly) Donlou, Gordon G. Donlou, Doris (Dan) Richmond, her grandson-in-law David Elliott, 11 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Trisagion Service will be held on Monday, October 8 at 7:00pm at St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church. The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, October 9 at 11:00am at St. Katherine followed by the Makaria and Graveside Interment at Green Hills Memorial Park.
