Josephine M. Mungovan
1918 - 2008
Born in Detroit, Michigan April 3, 1918 and entered eternal life July 26, 2008. Preceded in death by Joseph P. O'Reilly, Maurice J. Mungovan, and daughter Sheila M. Dull.
Survived by her children Dennis M. (Susan) O'Reilly, Maureen A. (William) Chalk, Terrence J. (Darla) O'Reilly, Joseph P. O'Reilly Jr, and Timothy G. O'Reilly; her son-in-law Thomas Dull; 11 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and sisters Mary Rita Dean, Mary Keliher, Ann Purcell and Patricia Bennett.
Josephine was baptized in Saint Bernard's Church, received her early education in the parish grammar school, and graduated from Saint Bernard's High School on Detroit's East Side. She married Lieutenant Joseph P. O'Reilly in September 1942 and accompanied him on assignments to Reno, Nevada and Palm Springs, California. She returned to Detroit in 1943 when he was reassigned to North Africa for the remainder of the War. He returned home in March 1946 and took a job with the Veterans Administration. In 1956, the Veterans Administration transferred him to Los Angeles, and California became the permanent home for the family. He died in 1971. Josephine started a home-based daycare business in 1960 and later owned and operated a successful nursery school business in Hawthorne, California until 1975.
In 1975 she married Maury Mungovan, a life-long bachelor and long-time family friend. He died in 1995. They enjoyed their early retirement years together traveling to visit friends and family throughout the U.S. and in Ireland. During this time she pursued interests in ceramics and the production of afghan blankets. She also took a leadership role in the Catholic Daughters of America.
Josephine found great joy in this life in raising her children, loving her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, caring for others, and the many friendships she had.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2008 at Saint Jerome's Catholic Church, 5530 Thornburn Street, Los Angeles, CA 90045. Rosary and visitation at 9:00 am. Mass at 10:00 am. Reception following at the family home located at 5866 W. 74th Street, Los Angeles, CA 90045.
