Joseph Theodore Blackstone, Jr. was born August 10, 1955 in Los Angeles, California to Roberta Webber and Joseph Blackstone, Sr. He attended Hooper Avenue Elementary School but was later transferred to Francis Blend Elementary School and Whitney School for the Blind which provided the education and the skills needed for children with sight impairments. His mother desired that he have a normal childhood and therefore she used all the resources available to him. Joseph became involved with the Braille Institution and Foundation for the Junior Blind where he began to flourish; becoming involved in many activities, which included performing in a school production of “Fiddler on the Roof”. Joseph attended Bethlehem Temple Church, under the pastorate of Bishop William L. Smith where he was baptized in Jesus name and filled with the precious gift of the Holy Ghost. He loved attending Sunday School and was always ready to have a bible discussion. Joseph was a member of the Junior Usher Board and Better Christian Club. His love for the Lord and for music were unquenchable. He would often be found somewhere singing or "preaching"! In 1979, he met his soul mate and the love of his life Diane Amos at the Foundation for the Junior Blind and they were married August 22, 1980. They were truly a loving, devoted and happy couple. Their impairments did not hinder their adventures. Often times you would find them walking down the street, holding hands (the cutest thing), headed to some activity. On May 17, 1984, they became the proud parents of a precious baby girl, April Chanel. Joseph attended Greater Bethany Community Church of Los Angeles under the pastorate of Bishop Robert W. McMurray. His current membership was at the Blessed Family Covenant Church in Inglewood, California under the pastorate of Pastor Wendy Howlett where he remained a faithful member until his demise. On February 2, 2018, Joseph transitioned from labor to reward; where there is no more pain, disappointments or impairments. His parents Roberta and Joseph, Sr.; sister Katrina Matthews, brothers: Harvey Blackston and Kimasi Browne all preceded him in death. He leaves to cherish his memories his devoted wife, Diane; daughter April Crawford (Mark); grandchildren Destiny and Xavier; siblings: Clarence Perkins (Janet); Renee Perkins; Romona Browne (Kimasi), Kathleen Jackson (Donald); William Jones (Tina); Wilma Yeargin (James, Sr.) and Jackie Blackstone; 11 nieces and nephews; a host of cousins; church family and friends.
