HALES, JOHN THOMPSON, passed away Saturday morning of September 24th, 2005. He was born November 14th, 1916 in Washington, D.C. He worked in advertising and publicity for over 30 years and lived in Hermosa Beach for some 58 years. He is survived by son, Donald M. Hales also of Hermosa Beach, CA., a brother-in-law, J.V. Mann and niece, Vickie M. Jenkins, both of Bend, OR and nephew, Jon Mann of Seattle, Washington. During his adult life he worked in the aerospace industry. He served on the Hermosa Beach Planning Commission from 1960-7; designed the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce logo in 1967; was named ther Man-of-the Year 1963-4 by the Chamber of Commerce. Additionally he designed the City of Torrance map type City Seal in the 1970's; served as the Publicity Chairman for the Torrance Armed Forces Day parade, 1964-1974. After running track in college, he again started up running in 1966 until this past year and participated in over 200 running races/events. Additionally with his wife, Lorraine, they were founding members of the Hermosa Beach Friends of the Library and the Hermosa Beach Historical Society and served on the Board of Directors of later from 1998 until the present. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, October 1st, 2005 at 10:00 AM at the Hermosa Beach Community Center Auditorium (PCH and Pier Avenue in Hermosa Beach) Private cremation and inurnment at Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA. En lieu of flowers, friends are encouraged to donate in John's memory with checks payable to the Hermosa Beach Historical Society, 710 Pier Avenue, Hermosa Beach, CA 90254

  1. John was one of the most talented and nicest men I ever met. I enjoyed listening to his stories of early airplane design and the use of the first rivets. We will miss him.
