John Omectin, a San Pedro native, recently moving to Long Beach, passed away on Friday, September 20, 2013 at Kaiser Center in Downey. Born in Los Angeles County, John was 68 when he died. He worked at Van Camp Cannery on Terminal Island for 20 years. He then worked as a Warehouse Security Guard and retired from the Brookvale Company.
John spent time camping, fishing and backpacking in the high Sierras. He liked crossword puzzles and enjoyed all military movies and shows and all westerns especially Bonanza. John loved sports. He played football for the Barton Hill Cougars and San Pedro High School. He coached baseball at Daniel's Field and Bloch Field.
John is survived by wife, Margaret Omectin and children, Vincent, Richard and Melissa Omectin. He has nine grandchildren – Elizabeth Omectin, Leann Omectin, Josie Omectin, John S. Omectin Cruz, Alyssa Omectin, Khalia Omectin, Lorenzo Herrera, Vincente Herrera, and Cynthia Herrera. John has one great grandchild, Amaiya Omectin; aunt, Mary Legaspi; three brothers, Tommy, Timboy, and Leonard; sisters, Lucy Gonzales, Carmen Omectin and Elsie Valdez; and numerous nieces and nephews. John was known by many as "Uncle John". He was preceded in death by parents, Conrad and Jovita Omectin; sister, Lupe Gardea, and Julio Omectin.
A gathering of family and friends will be held at Rice Mortuary on Monday September 30, 2013 from 12 noon. The service will begin in the Chapel at 2:00pm followed by a reception until 5:00 pm. Burial will be private.
