Winkler, John Henry John Henry Winkler Sr. passed away peacefully on January 1, 2008 at the age of 88. He was born in San Francisco where he attended school. He moved to San Pedro in 1939. John graduated with an AA degree from Compton College in 1941 and participated in the Civilian Pilot Training Program. After college he worked for Pacific Bell Telephone in San Pedro. On November 4, 1941 he was inducted into the Army Air Corps and became a flight officer in the glider assault program. He was captured on D-Day+1 and escaped two days later. John was also trained as a copilot to fly supplies on C-47 aircraft and received many military awards. John returned to his position at the telephone company after 18 months in England and France. He retired in 1982. John loved being with his family, was an excellent handyman and helped his family with many projects. His interests included: camping, photography, traveling, electronics, wood projects, skiing, skating, and crossword puzzles. John was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Elks Lodge 966 and the National Glider Association. John is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 61 years, Mary and two sons, John Jr. (Patty) and Chuck (Annette) and granddaughter Rochelle. He is also survived by his brother Dick (Margaret), sister-in-law Martha Watson, brother-in-law Jack Holt, three nephews and five nieces. He is preceded death by his parents and a niece. A Vigil Service will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church on Thursday, January 10, 2008 at 7:00 PM. The funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 AM at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with interment at Green Hills Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice.
