John C. Peterson of Manhattan Beach, California passed away peacefully on September 12, 2012. He was 98.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, his three daughters and his several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
John was born in Watford City, North Dakota on June 14, 1913. He graduated from Concordia College in Moorehead, Minnesota with a degree in Education and from the University of Minnesota with Masters degrees in Education and Mathematics. He was a professor of mathematics and later the principal of Gilby High School in Gilby, North Dakota. He proudly served his country in World War II as a radio operator. After World War II he was a professor of mathematics at the University of North Dakota. In 1957 he took a job with Hughes Aircraft and moved with his family to Manhattan Beach, California. At Hughes he was involved in the development of aviation software. While at Hughes he also taught math classes for UCLA. He retired in 1978. John was always very active in his church and community and lived a full and very productive life well into his 90s, tutoring math students at El Camino Community College, preparing tax returns for seniors, serving as an election officer and traveling to visit family and attend the annual Norsk Fest in North Dakota. His example will continue to provide inspiration to those who knew him and he is sorely missed.
Burial will be at Riverside National Cemetery on October 14, 2011 at 1:15 pm. Memorial service will be at Cornerstone Christian Fellowship Church, 300 North Redondo Avenue, Manhattan Beach on October 15, 2011 at 2 pm.
