Before relocating to the West Coast, Joan worked for the Massachusetts Department of Social Services as a social worker. In 1990 she began work at the California Department of Children and Family Services, where she rose to the rank of supervisor and where she has many loyal colleagues. Joan was a skilled sailor, musician and enthusiastic golfer.
