Joan Stimpfig, "Joanie Pony" (Dessert), age 70, of Manhattan Beach passed away Wednesday, July 11, 2018 of esophageal cancer. Joan was born May 30, 1948 to William and Catherine Dessert and she was raised in Lawndale, California on Prairie Avenue with her amazing family of 13 brothers and sisters. She was a graduate of Bishop Montgomery High School in 1966 and met the love of her life, John (a.k.a. The Commander), on the volleyball court at El Camino College a short time after. They went on to become engaged and were happily married for over 51 years. She was an avid athlete who enjoyed indoor and beach volleyball, soccer, and softball. She also enjoyed camping with her friends and family in the mountains and along the coast of California. Joan also had a passion for volunteering, especially when it came to helping children. She donated her time at the 1736 Family Crisis Center for battered wives and children and volunteered at multiple elementary schools in the area. Joan Stimpfig was loved by so many and will be incredibly missed! Her passion and love for family outweighed almost everything else she deemed important in life. If she wasn’t with family, she was planning things to do with everyone and helping others with endless energy! She was the ultimate care giver as a mom and a wife. This is how she showed her love, and this is the kind of person she was without effort. Giving, loving, Christian, nice, passionate and fierce in her devotion to family. We love you mom. You set an incredible example for us to follow and we will always be grateful for you. You left way too soon but know you will always be with us. She is survived by her husband John; daughter Janiece Snyder and her husband Richard; sons Jeff Stimpfig and his wife Ana, Jason Stimpfig and his wife Laurie; three grandsons Luke Snyder, Jake and Max Stimpfig; five granddaughters Samantha, Lily, and Ella Snyder; Brooke and Kylie Stimpfig and numerous brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Paul and Duffy Dessert. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday, August 16, 2018 at American Martyrs Church, 1431 Deegan Pl., Manhattan Beach with Msgr. Timothy Nichols. Classic Hawaiian attire is encouraged. The family will receive friends after the service over at the Snyder Home, 229 2nd Street, Manhattan Beach. Toward the conclusion of the get together, join us for a brief ocean paddle-out directly down at 2nd Street. In lieu of sending flowers, Joan hoped you could donate to another volleyball family’s fight against cancer - “Fight Like the Avery’s” fund at .
