July 13, 1930 ~ February 6, 2007
Passed away February 6, 2007 peacefully after a very long battle with emphysema. Joan was born July 13, 1930 in Portland, Oregon and moved to Manhattan in 1957 with a belief that it would be a wonderful environment to raise children in. Joan became involved in civic affairs first with the PTA, making sure her kids were first priority. She then moved on to the Manhattan Beach Planning Commission and Board of Zoning, working on projects like the creation of Sand Dune Park. She ran and was elected to the Manhattan Beach City Council in 1972 and served as the first woman mayor of MB during the bicentennial year 1975-1976. Notable events include the dedication of the new MB city hall and library. In recent years, Joan continued to remain politically and socially active, running new candidate's campaigns, volunteering at city hall as well as Little Company of Mary Hospital, and always lending advice and support to current council members. She is survived by sons, Steven Dontanville of Ojai, CA, Scott (Sarah) Dontanville of Larkspur, CO, daughter Stacey (Kevin) Arai of Palos Verdes Estates, CA, seven grandchildren, Kyle, Cambria, Conner, Caiden and Keaton Dontanville, and Alexis and Madchen Arai.
The services will be held at American Martyrs Church on Saturday Feb.10th, 2007 at 10AM. A brief reception will be held immediately after at the Holy Family House on the grounds of American Martyrs. A private family burial will follow.
