Janet Snyder Finnegan, a seven year resident of Torrance, CA, passed away Friday, November 28, 2008. Janet was born in Newark, NY on October 28, 1910, the daughter of Albert and Pearl Snyder. She was a graduate of Newark High School, Class of 1928 and Simmons College in Boston, Class of 1932. After teaching at Briarcliff, a preparatory school in Briarcliff Manor, NY, and working for the President of Plattsburgh State College, she met and married Maurice J. Finnegan of Bloomingdale, NY in 1942. After Maurice's WWII service, as an officer in the US Army, they settled in Malone, NY, where he was District Superintendent of Schools and Janet became active in numerous civic and social organizations. They maintained a home in Malone, NY and wintered in Dunedin, FL until 2001. Janet was an avid bridge player and enjoyed meeting and making friends all her life. She was also a true sports enthusiast and closely followed her beloved NY Yankees, NY Giants and the Boston Celtics. In 2001 Janet moved to California to be near her niece Patricia Kaupp of Palos Verdes Estates. Janet, who had a wonderful self image was comfortable with everyone and did not distinguish based upon one's station in life. She once remarked to her son that "wherever she went she always made good friends. Friends are more valuable to me than anything she said. I like to think that I've helped others, that I've been a good wife and mother, a good citizen and a good Christian." She will be remembered as so. Janet is predeceased by husband, Maurice, sister, Betty. She is survived by her son, J. Brent Finnegan, his wife Karen and her grandchildren J. Tyler and Brooks Brent, all of Boston, MA; her niece Patricia Kaupp, grand nieces Jennifer Hayday and Sarah Boyle of Palos Verdes Estates, CA and Felicia Kosman of Atkinson, NH. A memorial service will take place at Neighborhood Church, Palos Verdes Estates, CA on Friday, January 23, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow in August 2009 at St. Paul's Roman Catholic Cemetery in Bloomingdale, NY where Janet will be laid to rest alongside her loving husband, Maurice..   1. Dear Family of Janet Finnegan, I am sorry about the loss of your loved one. Words cannot describe feelings in a time like this. Many have found comfort in the Bible’s promises of seeing our past loved ones again such as at John 5 verses 28 and 29. Keep memories of your past loved one close.
