Janet Elaine Baetz, 78, of Los Angeles, California died Sunday, March 13, 2016 at Cedars Sinai Hospital after a long and courageous battle against kidney disease. Born June 21, 1937 in Compton, California, she was the first child of the late Walter Raymond and Doris Alva (née King) Cuzick. The family moved to Santa Maria, California when Jan was around 10 years of age. While her father worked in the oil fields, Jan helped her mother care for her growing family. She was an exemplary student with an ongoing thirst for education and the arts. She enjoyed singing, musicals, and the theater. Jan graduated from Santa Maria Union High School with the class of 1955. She later attended classes at West LA College in Culver City, earning twice the number of units necessary to graduate. Jan met her future husband in 1957 while working as a secretary at Northrop Aviation. She and Harold F. Baetz married at the First Methodist Church in Redondo Beach, California in 1960. They had a son, Robert in 1961, then a daughter, Joanne in 1963. Jan loved her family, and one of her greatest joys was providing a home and loving environment for them. She, along with her husband, attended countless activities for and with their children and grandchildren, enjoying the precious time with them. She was a Boy Scout den mother, a Job's Daughter's Bethel mother, a room mother at her children's schools. She attended PeeWee football games, swim meets, soccer games and school plays. After the birth of her children, Jan was employed at Hahn Development during the building of the Hawthorne Mall. When Jan began working for Abby Sher in October 1985, she brought her years of experience, helping to develop and manage the Edgemar Shopping Center in Santa Monica, California. For 30 years she served as Abby's dedicated and loyal personal assistant. Jan brought her personal touch to everything she did. She was always interested in the lives of the people she met. She remembered children and grandchildren, birthdays and anniversaries. She always had a sympathetic ear, a helping hand, and refreshments for her visitors. Her office door was always open and she greeted each passerby with a smile and kind word. Jan loved to cook, often watching cooking channels for expert advice – with the finished product always enjoyed by family and friends. Jan loved not only her family with great passion, but also enjoyed experiencing varied events and celebrations. She was as comfortable and happy at a Santa Maria Rodeo as she was at a Championship boat race in Burley, Idaho, or a camping trip to Bass Lake, California. It didn't matter where she was or what she was doing – it was always all about family and making them and others happy. Jan was a very special person and will be greatly missed by her family, friends and associates. Jan is survived by her husband Harold, her son Robert, her daughter Joanne, and three loving grandchildren, Tyler, Brianna and Kaitlyn. She enjoyed a large family while growing up, and is preceded in death by a sister, Marie and a brother, Ray. She is survived by four sisters, Grace, Shirley, Kathy and Lois. Jan is also survived by many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and extended family. A viewing will be held at 3:00 p.m. on April 2, 2016 at McCormick Mortuary Inglewood, 635 S. Prairie Avenue, Inglewood, California 90301. Services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Family and friends are invited to a meal and celebration of Jan's life directly after on the facility grounds.
