Jan Frederik Van Leeuwen, Jr. of Rancho Palos Verdes was born in October 1926 to his Dutch parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jan Frederik (Jacoba Bos) Van Leeuwen Sr. in Bindjai, Sumatra, Dutch East Indies (now, Indonesia). Jan is survived by his wife June Haskell, son Hendrick Sieger Van Leeuwen, daughters Diana Katrina Bendas and Lenora Wilhelmina Lyter, 13 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Jan was preceded in death by his first wife, Catherine Wilhelmina Bykerk, their daughter Donna Jantina Marsden who perished in the 1989 San Francisco earthquake, brother Donald Van Leeuwen, and sisters Alida Van Gores and Bobby Buoncristiani. Born on a tobacco plantation managed by his father in Sumatra, Jan immigrated to the United States from Holland as a child. He served in the Merchant Marine during WWII, followed by a 26 year career as a detective in the Los Angeles Police Department. Since retirement Jan has acted as Chaplain for the Los Angeles Retired Fire & Police Association. Jan was an artist, oil painter, and a member of The Masons. He was honored by his local church for creating a unique annual poinsettia Christmas tree. Jan touched many lives, was sincerely loved, and will be deeply missed by family and friends.

  1. My sincere condolences upon his passing. As a retired LAPD Detective I have attended numerous functions at which Jan spoke and gave blessings. He will be missed by all. His paintings adorn many homes of Retired Officers. All we can say is Thank You for the Memories. God Bless You.
