February 16, 1917 ~ February 4, 2007
James Albert Gillig, 89, long time El Segundo resident and retired local businessman passed away last Sunday, February 4.
Born in Los Angeles on February 16, 1917, Jim, as he was known to family and friends alike, moved to El Segundo after serving in the United States Coast Guard during the Second World War. He persuaded his brother, Howard Gillig, to move his family to El Segundo to become his business partner.
They opened Gillig Bros. Automotive Repair next to Bob Frederick's Chevron on West Grand. Eventually they opened Gillig Bros. Goodyear on Main Street Where the present day UPS Store is located, had a used car lot in the 400 block of Main and owned a Kaiser/Fraizer Card Dealership. Before retirement, Jim and Howard were the first owners of the recently torn down Shell Service Station on the corner of Grand and Eucalyptus.
Long active in his Church, Jim and Howard were often at St. Anthony's Church at the request of the pastor, dealing with plumbing, electrical and other problems. Howard passed away in 2003.
Hi is survived by his wife, Lottie Gillig, his daughter June, two grandchildren - Kimberly and James, and stepchildren Robert, Michael, Steven, Linda and Lisa. Hi is also survived by his brother Frank and numerous nephews and nieces.
A Rosary will be held at St. Anthony's Church Friday, February 9, 2007 at 7:00 P.M. Funeral services will be held at St. Anthony's Church on Saturday, February 10, 2007 at 12 Noon with interment to follow at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Culver City.
