J. Desmond
John Desmond McConn passed away July 3, 2009 at age 86. He had been spending his retirement years in residence at home in Palos Verdes Estates with his wife Sirkku. "Des" was born September 3rd, 1922 in Manchester, England and then his family returned to Ireland where he attended primary school through University. He graduated medical school from University College Dublin and completed a fellowship in ophthalmology at the Royal College of Surgeons in London. Des married Denise Brichon in 1956 in France and began an adventure immigrating to California where they raised six children Nicole (DeDivitiis), Mark, Christopher, Anthony, Raymond and Suzanne. Dr McConn was a locally prominent ophthalmologist in the South Bay where he ran his practice from 1959 to 1988. He was preceded in death by his wife Denise in 1984. Desmond has five grandchildren Ryan, Margaux, Stephen, Katherine and Andrew. Des's passions were history, poetry, theology, music, the classics and intellectual debate but his greatest gift of all was storytelling. He was engaging, witty and hilarious in delivery. Desmond remarried in 1989 to Sirkku Posti, his current wife of 20 years. He is also survived by his sister Philo McConn, a resident of Wales. Funeral services for Desmond shall be held at St Lawrence Martyr Catholic Church, 1900 So Prospect Avenue, Redondo Beach, 90277, at 10am on Tues, July 7, 2009 with a burial to follow at Green Hills Memorial Cemetery, 27501 So Western Ave, Rancho Palos Verdes, 90274. Rice Mortuary, 5310 Torrance Blvd, Torrance 90503 will host calling hours Monday evening, July 6th from 4-8pm. The rosary shall be offered there at 7pm.   1. Dr. McConn was my very first eye doctor, when I was in 8th grade at Malaga Cove Intermediate School in 1966. He was competent, thorough, and had a calming manner, and his distinctive brogue-inflected voice was endearing. I knew my ocular health was in good hands with him. His lens prescriptions for me were spot-on.
