Hermie
Hermie Louise McMillen Powers born February 19, 1909 in Rockport MO., went home to the Lord on January 28, 2009 from natural causes of old age. Hermie moved to Gardena with her parents and brothers when she was five years old. Her grandparents had moved to Gardena a few years earlier. Her school years and young adulthood were spent in South LA. She moved back to Gardena in 1949 where she remained until her death. She was referred to by her family and friends by the nickname, "The Energizer Bunny". She always seemed to be on the go. She loved homemaking and mothering and was a skilled seamstress, cook, baker, decorator and hostess. She had her own business for many years, "June's Weddings" in which she made the dresses, headpieces, did the flower arrangements, catered all the food at the receptions, and even went to school to learn how to decorate the wedding cakes. She loved it! She and her husband Don also owned and operated a laundry cleaning establishment in Gardena where she did all the tailoring and alterations. She was always prepared and her children and grandchildren counted on going to "Grammas' store" whenever we needed ANYTHING, and she ALWAYS came right up with it from the smallest safety pin to the largest piece of furniture. She was a great friend and neighbor and belonged to the St. Anthony Senior Citizens group for many years. She continued driving other seniors to their weekly bingo well into her 90's. She was preceded in death by her husband Donald, her brother Alfred McMillen and his wife Dolly Gray, her brother John McMillen and his wife Bea, brother George McMillen, son Theodore Harrington, her grandson Christorpher Stewart and oldest and best friend Anne Lovan. She will always be in the hearts of those who survive and miss her: her sister-in-law Mary McMillen in Burbank, and their children and grandchildren, her brother Herald McMillen and his wife Marian living in Carlsbad and their children and grandchildren, her daughter-in-law Darlene Harrington living in Escondido, her daughter Patricia Powell living in Gardena, and her grandchildren: Joyce Stewart living in San Clemente and their children and grandchildren, Janna and her husband John Merritt and their child living in Downey, Margie and her husband Tony Ford living in Lawndale and their child and grandchild and Andy Powell and his wife Cindy living in Long Beach. Services will be held on Saturday February 7, 2009 at 1 pm at St Georges Episcopal Church, 4679 W. El Segundo Bl. Hawthorne, Ca, 90251. A reception following the service will be at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 5900 Wilshire Bl. Suite 1100, Los Angeles, CA 90036. 1-800-660-1993.
