Herbert Langdon Drake, born in Los Angeles, an 87 year resident of Redondo Beach, passed away on Monday, May 31, 2010 in Torrance, CA. At 87 years old, Herb fittingly passed on Memorial Day as he served in the Army Air Corp during World War II in the South Pacific from New Guiney, through the Philippines, Okinawa and Japan. Herb completed 20 years in the Air Force and 20 years with the Post Office, and went on to enjoy 25 years of retirement. Herb built a home in Redondo Beach for his family in the 40's and has been an accomplished handyman ever since. Herb enjoyed playing the organ, piano and harmonica, along with gardening, traveling and spending time with family and friends. Herb was a volunteer President of the South Bay Pony Baseball League, assisted with the "Gray-Y" and other youth organizations. He was an upstanding productive citizen; helpful and generous, even to homeless animals. Herb was a man who valued fairness, honesty and reliability. Herbert is survived by Wife of 60 years, Ernestine Drake of Redondo Beach, CA, Son, Herbert (Vera) Drake Jr. of Salton City, CA and Daughter, Denise (Larry) Jordan of Belmont Shore, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth and, Herbert Drake. A gathering of family & friends will be held at White & Day Colonial Mortuary, 901 Torrance Blvd, Redondo Beach, (Corner of Prospect Ave and Torrance Blvd) on Sunday, June 6, 2010 from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The Service will be held at White & Day Colonial Mortuary Chapel on Monday, June 7, 2010 at 12:30 PM. Burial will follow at Pacific Crest Cemetery in Redondo Beach.
