Henry R. Gomez September 1, 1923 - November 20, 2009 Henry Gomez was born and raised in Gardena, California. He passed away peacefully early Friday morning at his home in Hermosa Beach surrounded by family. Henry served in the Army in World War II in the European arena. He was awarded two medals for his service. Henry married Celia Valenzuela in 1953. They were married for 54 years and had three children. He worked for and retired from U.S. Steel in Torrance, California. For many years Dad would play golf every chance he had. He could often be found at Alondra Park with a group of his regular golf buddies. He always put family first. Spending time with family was a priority and he was happiest when surrounded by loved ones. He was an active fan of his grandchildren's sporting and extracurricular events. He and Mom would often travel to get front row seats in support of these activities. He also loved to travel with a local group taking bus trips to Laughlin and Las Vegas. He enjoyed hunting and sporting events, including basketball, baseball and horseracing. He could use a table saw with skill and was able to repair most anything around the house that needed to be done. He also enjoyed doing word searches and playing the lotto. He and Mom were fortunate enough to have an opportunity to travel extensively together to many foreign and exotic destinations. Dad particularly loved to visit local eateries. Some of his favorites were Marie Callenders, Coco's, Casa Pulido and Joe's - where owners and staff alike made him feel like family. He would religiously go out for salmon every Friday. Dad was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe parish. Dad is survived by his three children, Daughter, Victoria (Hans) Schneider of Salem, OR; Son, Gregory (Vicki) Gomez of Palos Verdes Estates, CA; Daughter, Yvonne (Joseph) Gigliello of Carlsbad, CA; Sister, Helen Rocha of Gardena and 6 Grandchildren: Veronica and Heather Schneider; Matthew and Megan Gomez; David and Celina Gigliello; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, wife - Celia, his siblings and parents Angela and Victor Gomez. A gathering of family and friends will be held at McCormick Mortuary in Redondo Beach on Tuesday November 24, 2009 from 6:00-9:00 PM. Service will be held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Hermosa Beach on Wednesday November 25, 2009 at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow at Holy Cross in Culver City. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Our Lady of Guadalupe Building Fund.   2. Although I never had the privledge of meeting Mr. Gomez, I heard in great length about his wonderful character and his ability to love his friends and family. He will be greatly missed by many.
