Helen Florence Stringer, 89, of Hermosa Beach, passed away Feb. 2, 2009. Born Helen Nelson on May 19, 1919 in Montreal, Canada, Helen worked as a secretary until marrying James Hutchison in 1941. In 1955, she and Jim immigrated to Manhattan Beach with their two daughters. Helen worked for more than 30 years as a legal secretary in the South Bay area. Two years after Jim died in 1967, she married Robert Stringer. Together for 36 years, they enjoyed sailing as members of the King Harbor Yacht club, traveling, and photography. Helen was also a talented calligrapher who made her own line of greeting cards and sold them at many street fairs in the South Bay. After retiring, Helen joined the South Bay Auxiliary to Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, and was an active member for more than 15 years, including working in the auxiliary's thrift shop on Aviation Boulevard and serving as treasurer. She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert. She is survived by her two daughters, Linda Hutchison of La Jolla, and Barbara Seeley of Hermosa Beach, five grandchildren, a step-grandson, and three great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by her friends and family and remembered always for her grace, graciousness, warmth, gentle wit, insightful nature, charming smile, patience, and kindness. Services will be held on Sunday, Feb. 15 at 11 a.m., at Rice Mortuary, 5310 Torrance Blvd, Torrance. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the South Bay Auxiliary to Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, c/o Jan Haas, 5114 Newton St., Torrance, CA 90505.

  1. My wife, Nina, and I were Torrance neighbors of Helen and Bob since 1986. They were such wonderful neighbors, and they were so kind to Nina after she got sick in 1999. I lost her to MS in 2003. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this sad time.
